GUS CAO discusses AI’s Role in Education at IAUP Convention in Beijing

Professor Maurits van Rooijen, Chief Academic Officer of Global University Systems, recently spoke at the International Association of University Presidents (IAUP), which held its convention in Beijing, China. Around 1,000 delegates came together to explore the impact of artificial intelligence on the future of education. Over two days, participants discussed AI’s role while also exploring new partnership opportunities.
The convention, which takes place every three years, featured Nobel laureate Michael Levitt as the keynote speaker, who offered provocative predictions on AI’s future role in higher education.
Reflecting on Levitt’s remarks, Professor Maurits van Rooijen, highlighted both the promise and challenges of AI in education, stating: “AI offers us incredible tools to enhance learning efficiency and personalise education, but it must be integrated with critical thinking and human intuition. Education, after all, remains a deeply human endeavour.”
The convention emphasised not only the obstacles but also the potential benefits AI brings to global universities as they explore innovative ways of collaboration.
