The University of Law shortlisted for Amicus Awards

Earlier this month, The University of Law was delighted to be shortlisted for the Champions of Justice – Academic Team Category at the Amicus Champions of Justice Awards 2023.
Jane Officer founded Amicus in 1992, in memory of her penpal, Andrew Lee Jones. Despite a lack of scientific evidence linking him to the crime, Andrew was charged with murder and executed in Louisiana in 1991. After seeing how Andrew was treated and speaking to his family, she went on to found Amicus.
Amicus runs various volunteer placement programmes in the UK and US to ensure prisoners on death row have access to good legal representation.
The Champions of Justice Awards celebrates the remarkable pro bono efforts made by law firms and individual volunteers to uphold justice in the US death penalty system. The Academic Team category is new to 2023 and aims to highlight teams who have gone above and beyond in their pursuit of justice.
The University of Law is also shortlisted in the Amicus Student Awards for Stand Out Student Group. Several students volunteer time and knowledge to ensure death row inmates receive legal representation, and it is wonderful to see their hard work recognised by this nomination.
