UCW launches new educational video series exploring Indigenous history

On Wednesday 10 April, University Canada West released a six-part educational series titled: Understanding Indigenous History: A Path Forward, on its YouTube channel.

The series, hosted by Lisa LaFlamme, an award-winning Canadian broadcast journalist, aims to encourage Canadians to learn about Indigenous history through powerful personal narratives and engage directly with truth and reconciliation.

Featuring interviews with Phil Fontaine, a prominent First Nations leader, and Kathleen Mahony, an internationally recognised human rights expert, Understanding Indigenous History: A Path Forward, can be used in classrooms, libraries, homes or workplaces to bridge the past with the present, paving the way for a brighter future.

Phil Fontaine and Kathleen Mahoney said: “All good teaching is about transformation – individual, collective and institutional. Each of these levels is needed to foster reconciliation for all wrongs done to Indigenous peoples in Canada. We hope this series assists in some small way towards that end.”

To promote the digital release, a press conference was held on Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Wednesday morning, followed by an exclusive screening of one of the episodes for Members of Parliament, Senators and other invited guests.

With the first two episodes available to view now, two episodes will be released weekly until Wednesday 24 April on UCW’s YouTube channel.
