UCW hosts two events to celebrate launch of Indigenous history series

On Wednesday 17 April, University Canada West hosted a special event in Vancouver celebrating the launch of its new educational series, ‘Understanding Indigenous History: A Path Forward’.

Hosted by Lisa LaFlamme, an award-winning Canadian broadcast journalist, and featuring interviews with Phil Fontaine, a prominent First Nations leader and former National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations, and Kathleen Mahoney, an internationally recognised human rights expert, the six-part series aims to help viewers navigate and understand the complex tapestries of Indigenous history and truth and reconciliation in Canada, bridging the past with the present and paving the way for a brighter future.

The event in Vancouver included an exclusive preview of ‘Episode 4: Leadership & Governance’ for invited guests and dignitaries, followed by a reception where attendees could engage with Phil Fontaine, Kathleen Mahoney and Lisa LaFlamme. It was an afternoon filled with insight, reflection and a shared commitment to building recognition and respect for the Indigenous peoples of Canada.

UCW also hosted a launch event at Parliament Hill in Ottawa on Wednesday 10 April, including a formal press conference and exclusive screening of one of the episodes followed by a reception for Members of Parliament, Senators and other invited guests, including Cindy Woodhouse Nepinak, National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

Dr Bashir Makhoul, UCW President and Vice-Chancellor, said in his speech at the event: “Recognising the importance of acknowledging our past, initiatives like this series are crucial for educating people about historical injustices and working towards a fairer future.

“This series, consisting of six episodes, represents our commitment at UCW to contribute to this discourse by investing both ideas and resources. Our goal is to promote understanding and awareness, not only for others but also for ourselves.”

The series is the result of months of work by UCW’s Marketing and Communications Department, led by Midya U, Vice-President of Marketing and Communications, in collaboration with Rosa Hwang, Producer and Writer, and Stéphane Brisson, Filmmaker.

All six episodes are now available to watch here.
